We said: "O Adam! dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden; and eat of the bountiful things therein as (where and when) ye will; but approach not this tree, or ye run into harm and transgression."

And remember We said: "Enter this town, and eat of the plenty therein as ye wish; but enter the gate with humility, in posture and in words, and We shall forgive you your faults and increase (the portion of) those who do good."

Or (take) the similitude of one who passed by a hamlet, all in ruins to its roofs. He said: "Oh! how shall Allah bring it (ever) to life, after (this) its death?" but Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him up (again). He said: "How long didst thou tarry (thus)?" He said: (Perhaps) a day or part of a day." He said: "Nay, thou hast tarried thus a hundred years; but look at thy food and thy drink; they show no signs of age; and look at thy donkey: And that We may make of thee a sign unto the people, Look further at the bones, how We bring them together and clothe them with flesh." When this was shown clearly to him, he said: "I know that Allah hath power over all things."

What they spend in the life of this (material) world May be likened to a wind which brings a nipping frost: It strikes and destroys the harvest of men who have wronged their own souls: it is not Allah that hath wronged them, but they wrong themselves.

And why should ye not fight in the cause of Allah and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated (and oppressed)?- Men, women, and children, whose cry is: "Our Lord! Rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from thee one who will protect; and raise for us from thee one who will help!"

"Wherever ye are, death will find you out, even if ye are in towers built up strong and high!" If some good befalls them, they say, "This is from Allah"; but if evil, they say, "This is from thee" (O Prophet). Say: "All things are from Allah." But what hath come to these people, that they fail to understand a single fact?

Say: "Who is it that delivereth you from the dark recesses of land and sea, when ye call upon Him in humility and silent terror: 'If He only delivers us from these (dangers), (we vow) we shall truly show our gratitude'?"

And they say that such and such cattle and crops are taboo, and none should eat of them except those whom - so they say - We wish; further, there are cattle forbidden to yoke or burden, and cattle on which, (at slaughter), the name of Allah is not pronounced; - inventions against Allah's name: soon will He requite them for their inventions.

They say: "What is in the wombs of such and such cattle is specially reserved (for food) for our men, and forbidden to our women; but if it is still-born, then all have share therein. For their (false) attribution (of superstitions to Allah), He will soon punish them: for He is full of wisdom and knowledge.

"O Adam! dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden, and enjoy (its good things) as ye wish: but approach not this tree, or ye run into harm and transgression."

Then began Satan to whisper suggestions to them, bringing openly before their minds all their shame that was hidden from them (before): he said: "Your Lord only forbade you this tree, lest ye should become angels or such beings as live for ever."

To the Thamud people (We sent) Salih, one of their own brethren: He said: "O my people! worship Allah: ye have no other god but Him. Now hath come unto you a clear (Sign) from your Lord! This she-camel of Allah is a Sign unto you: So leave her to graze in Allah's earth, and let her come to no harm, or ye shall be seized with a grievous punishment.

But when good (times) came, they said, "This is due to us;" When gripped by calamity, they ascribed it to evil omens connected with Moses and those with him! Behold! in truth the omens of evil are theirs in Allah's sight, but most of them do not understand!

"And ordain for us that which is good, in this life and in the Hereafter: for we have turned unto Thee." He said: "With My punishment I visit whom I will; but My mercy extendeth to all things. That (mercy) I shall ordain for those who do right, and practise regular charity, and those who believe in Our signs;-

And remember it was said to them: "Dwell in this town and eat therein as ye wish, but say the word of humility and enter the gate in a posture of humility: We shall forgive you your faults; We shall increase (the portion of) those who do good."

Whenever there cometh down a sura, some of them say: "Which of you has had His faith increased by it?" Yea, those who believe,- their faith is increased and they do rejoice.

He it is Who enableth you to traverse through land and sea; so that ye even board ships;- they sail with them with a favourable wind, and they rejoice thereat; then comes a stormy wind and the waves come to them from all sides, and they think they are being overwhelmed: they cry unto Allah, sincerely offering (their) duty unto Him saying, "If thou dost deliver us from this, we shall truly show our gratitude!"

And they were pursued by a Curse in this life,- and on the Day of Judgment. Ah! Behold! for the 'Ad rejected their Lord and Cherisher! Ah! Behold! removed (from sight) were 'Ad the people of Hud!

"And O my people! This she-camel of Allah is a symbol to you: leave her to feed on Allah's (free) earth, and inflict no harm on her, or a swift penalty will seize you!"

And they are followed by a curse in this (life) and on the Day of Judgment: and woeful is the gift which shall be given (unto them)!

All that we relate to thee of the stories of the messengers,- with it We make firm thy heart: in them there cometh to thee the Truth, as well as an exhortation and a message of remembrance to those who believe.

Then when they opened their baggage, they found their stock-in-trade had been returned to them. They said: "O our father! What (more) can we desire? this our stock-in-trade has been returned to us: so we shall get (more) food for our family; We shall take care of our brother; and add (at the same time) a full camel's load (of grain to our provisions). This is but a small quantity.

Say thou: "This is my way: I do invite unto Allah,- on evidence clear as the seeing with one's eyes,- I and whoever follows me. Glory to Allah! and never will I join gods with Allah!"

To the righteous (when) it is said, "What is it that your Lord has revealed?" they say, "All that is good." To those who do good, there is good in this world, and the Home of the Hereafter is even better and excellent indeed is the Home of the righteous,-

But those who were blind in this world, will be blind in the hereafter, and most astray from the Path.

Such (being their state), we raised them up (from sleep), that they might question each other. Said one of them, "How long have ye stayed (here)?" They said, "We have stayed (perhaps) a day, or part of a day." (At length) they (all) said, "Allah (alone) knows best how long ye have stayed here.... Now send ye then one of you with this money of yours to the town: let him find out which is the best food (to be had) and bring some to you, that (ye may) satisfy your hunger therewith: And let him behave with care and courtesy, and let him not inform any one about you.

He went into his garden in a state (of mind) unjust to his soul: He said, "I deem not that this will ever perish,

They said: "Never shall we regard thee as more than the Clear Signs that have come to us, or than Him Who created us! so decree whatever thou desirest to decree: for thou canst only decree (touching) the life of this world.

Behold! he said to his father and his people, "What are these images, to which ye are (so assiduously) devoted?"

我说：“阿丹啊！你和你的妻子同住乐园吧！你们俩可以任意吃园里所有丰富的食物，你们俩不要临近这棵树；否则，就要变成不义的人。”

当时，我说：“你们进这城市去，你们可以随意吃其中所有丰富的食物。你们应当鞠躬而进城门，并且说：｀释我重负。＇我将赦宥你们的种种罪过，我要厚报善人。”

难道你没有看见那个人吗？他经过一个荒凉的颓废的城市，他说：“真主怎样使这个已死的城市复活呢？”故真主使他在死亡的状态下逗留了一百年，然後使他复活。他说：“你逗留了多久？”他说：“我逗留了一日，或不到一日。”他说：“不然，你已逗留了一百年。你看你的饮食，没有腐败。你看你的驴子。我要以你为世人的迹象。你看这些骸骨，我怎样配合他，怎样以肉套在它的上面。”当他明白这件事的时候，他说：“我知道真主对於万事是全能的。”

他们在今世生活中所施舍的，譬如寒风吹向自欺的民众的禾稼上，就把它毁灭了。真主没有亏枉他们，但他们自欺。

你们怎么不为（保护）主道和（解救）老弱妇孺而抗战呢？他们常说：“我们的主啊！求你从这个虐民所居的城市里把我们救出去。求你从你那里为我们委任一个保护者，求你从你们那里为我们委任一个援助者。”

你们无论在什么地方，死亡总要追及你们，即使你们在高大的堡垒里。如果他们获得福利，他们就说：“这是真主所降赐的。”如果他们遭遇祸患，他们就说：“这是你所召致的。”你说：“祸福都是真主所降的。”这些民众，怎么几乎一句话都不懂呢？

你们无论在什么地方，死亡总要追及你们，即使你们在高大的堡垒里。如果他们获得福利，他们就说：“这是真主所降赐的。”如果他们遭遇祸患，他们就说：“这是你所召致的。”你说：“祸福都是真主所降的。”这些民众，怎么几乎一句话都不懂呢？

你说：“你们谦逊地和秘密地祈祷说：'如果他拯救我们脱离这些苦难，我们必定感谢他。'谁能拯救你们脱离陆地和海洋的各种苦难呢？”

他们妄言：”这些是禁牲和禁谷，只有我们所意欲的人才可以吃；这些牲畜，是不准人骑的；这些牲畜，是不诵真主之名而宰的。”他们假借真主的名义而造谣，他要为他们造谣而报酬他们。

他们说：“这些牲畜所怀的胎儿，是专归我们男人的，对于我们的妻子是禁物。”如果那胎儿生下来是死的，他们就共同吃它。真主要为他们捏造谣言而报酬他们。他确是至睿的，确是全知的。

“阿丹啊！你和你的妻子同住乐园吧，你们可以随意吃园里的食物。但不要临近这棵树；否则，就要变成不义者。”

但恶魔教唆他俩，以致为他俩显出他俩的被遮盖的阴部。他说：“你俩的主禁你们俩吃这棵树的果实，只为不愿你俩变成天神，或永生不灭。”

（我确已派遣）赛莫德人的弟兄撒立哈去教化他们，他说：“我的宗族啊！你们要崇拜真主，除他之外，绝无应受你们崇拜的。从你们的主发出的明证确已降临你们，这只真主的母驼可以作你们的迹象。故你们让它在真主的大地上随便吃草，不要伤害它，否则，痛苦的刑罚必袭击你们。”

当幸福降临他们的时候，他们说：“这是我们所应得的。”当灾难降临他们的时候，他们则归咎于穆萨及其教徒们的不祥。真的，他们的厄运是在真主那里注定的，只是他们大半不知道罢了！

求你在今世和后世为我们注定幸福，我们确已对你悔过了。”主说：“我的刑罚，是用去惩治我欲惩治的人的，我的慈恩是包罗万物的。我将注定以我的慈恩归于敬畏真主，完纳天课，而且信仰我的迹象者。”

当时，（我）对他们说：“你们可以居住在这个城市，而任意吃其中的食物，你们应当鞠躬而入城门，并且说：『释我重负』，我就饶恕你们的种种罪过，我要厚报善人。”

当降示一章经的时候，他们中有人说：“这章经使你们中的哪个人更加确信呢？”至于信道者，那章经使他们更加确信了。同时，他们是快乐的。

真主使你们在陆上和海上旅行。当你们坐在船中，乘顺风而航行，并因风而欣喜的时候，暴风向船袭来，波涛从各处滚来，船里的人猜想自己已被包围，他们虔诚地祈祷真主，”如果你使我们脱离这次灾难，我们必定感谢你。”

他们在今世和复活日，永遭诅咒。真的，阿德人确已否认他们的主。真的！阿德人--呼德的宗族--愿他们遭受毁灭！

我的宗族啊！这是真主的母驼，可以做你们的迹象，所以你们应当让它在真主的大地上吃草，不要伤害它，否则，临近的惩罚将袭击你们。”

他们在今世受诅咒，在复活日也遭受诅咒。他们所受的援助真恶劣！

关于使者们的消息，我把它告诉你，用来安定你的心。在这些消息中，真理以及对信士们的训戒和记念已降临你了。

当他们打开自己的粮袋的时候，发现他们的财物已退还他们了，他们说：“我们的父亲啊！我们还要求什么呢？这是我们的财物，已退还我们了，我们要为我们的眷属籴粮，要保护我们的弟弟，我们可以多籴一驮粮，那是容易获得的粮食。”

你说：“这是我的道，我号召人们信仰真主，我和随从我的人，都是依据明证的。（我证）真主，超绝万物！我不是以物配主的。”

有人问敬畏者说：“你们的主曾降示什么？”他们说：“他降示善言。”行善者在今世将享受美满的生活，而后世的住宅确是更好的。敬爱者的住宅真优美。

在今世是盲人者，在后世仍是盲人，而且更加迷误。

我如此使他们觉醒，以便他们互相询问，其中有一个人说：“你们逗留了多久？”他们说：“我们逗留了一天，或不到一天。”他们说：“你们的主最清楚你们逗留的时间的。你们自己派一个人，带著你们的这些银币到城里去，看看谁家的食品最清洁，叫他买点食品来给你们，要叫他很谨慎，不要使任何人知道你们。

他自负地走进自己的园圃，说：“我想这个园圃永不荒芜，

他们说：“我们绝不愿挑选你而抛弃已降临我们的明证和创造我们的主宰。你要怎么办就怎么办吧！你只能在今世生活中任意而为。

当时，他对他的父亲和宗族说：“你们所依恋的这些雕像是什么东西？”
