When it is said to them: "Make not mischief on the earth," they say: "Why, we only Want to make peace!"

When it is said to them: "Believe as the others believe:" They say: "Shall we believe as the fools believe?" Nay, of a surety they are the fools, but they do not know.

But the transgressors changed the word from that which had been given them; so We sent on the transgressors a plague from heaven, for that they infringed (Our command) repeatedly.

When it is said to them, "Believe in what Allah Hath sent down, "they say, "We believe in what was sent down to us:" yet they reject all besides, even if it be Truth confirming what is with them. Say: "Why then have ye slain the prophets of Allah in times gone by, if ye did indeed believe?"

When it is said to them: "Follow what Allah hath revealed:" They say: "Nay! we shall follow the ways of our fathers." What! even though their fathers Were void of wisdom and guidance?

When it is said to him, "Fear Allah", He is led by arrogance to (more) crime. Enough for him is Hell;-An evil bed indeed (To lie on)!

When it is said to them: "Come to what Allah hath revealed, and to the Messenger": Thou seest the Hypocrites avert their faces from thee in disgust.

Hast thou not turned Thy vision to those who were told to hold back their hands (from fight) but establish regular prayers and spend in regular charity? When (at length) the order for fighting was issued to them, behold! a section of them feared men as - or even more than - they should have feared Allah: They said: "Our Lord! Why hast Thou ordered us to fight? Wouldst Thou not Grant us respite to our (natural) term, near (enough)?" Say: "Short is the enjoyment of this world: the Hereafter is the best for those who do right: Never will ye be dealt with unjustly in the very least!

When it is said to them: "Come to what Allah hath revealed; come to the Messenger": They say: "Enough for us are the ways we found our fathers following." what! even though their fathers were void of knowledge and guidance?

And remember it was said to them: "Dwell in this town and eat therein as ye wish, but say the word of humility and enter the gate in a posture of humility: We shall forgive you your faults; We shall increase (the portion of) those who do good."

But the transgressors among them changed the word from that which had been given them so we sent on them a plague from heaven. For that they repeatedly transgressed.

O ye who believe! what is the matter with you, that, when ye are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah, ye cling heavily to the earth? Do ye prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the Hereafter.

"At length will be said to the wrong-doers: 'Taste ye the enduring punishment! ye get but the recompense of what ye earned!'"

The word came: "O Noah! Come down (from the Ark) with peace from Us, and blessing on thee and on some of the peoples (who will spring) from those with thee: but (there will be other) peoples to whom We shall grant their pleasures (for a time), but in the end will a grievous penalty reach them from Us."

When it is said to them, "What is it that your Lord has revealed?" they say, "Tales of the ancients!"

If ye find no one in the house, enter not until permission is given to you: if ye are asked to go back, go back: that makes for greater purity for yourselves: and Allah knows well all that ye do.

When it is said to them, "Prostrate to (Allah) Most Gracious!", they say, "And what is (Allah) Most Gracious? Shall we prostrate to that which thou commandest us?" And it increases their flight (from the Truth).

So when she arrived, she was asked, "Is this thy throne?" She said, "It was just like this; and knowledge was bestowed on us in advance of this, and we have submitted to Allah (in Islam)."

She was asked to enter the lofty Palace: but when she saw it, she thought it was a lake of water, and she (tucked up her skirts), uncovering her legs. He said: "This is but a palace paved smooth with slabs of glass." She said: "O my Lord! I have indeed wronged my soul: I do (now) submit (in Islam), with Solomon, to the Lord of the Worlds."

When they are told to follow the (Revelation) that Allah has sent down, they say: "Nay, we shall follow the ways that we found our fathers (following). "What! even if it is Satan beckoning them to the Penalty of the (Blazing) Fire?

It was said: "Enter thou the Garden." He said: "Ah me! Would that my People knew (what I know)!-

When they are told, "Fear ye that which is before you and that which will be after you, in order that ye may receive Mercy," (they turn back).

And when they are told, "Spend ye of (the bounties) with which Allah has provided you," the Unbelievers say to those who believe: "Shall we then feed those whom, if Allah had so willed, He would have fed, (Himself)?- Ye are in nothing but manifest error."

For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride,

(To them) will be said: "Enter ye the gates of Hell, to dwell therein: and evil is (this) Abode of the Arrogant!"

Then shall it be said to them: "Where are the (deities) to which ye gave part-worship-

Nothing is said to thee that was not said to the messengers before thee: that thy lord has at his Command (all) forgiveness as well as a most Grievous Penalty.

"And when it was said that the promise of Allah was true, and that the Hour- there was no doubt about its (coming), ye used to say, 'We know not what is the hour: we only think it is an idea, and we have no firm assurance.'"

And in the Thamud (was another Sign): Behold, they were told, "Enjoy (your brief day) for a little while!"

One Day will the Hypocrites- men and women - say to the Believers: "Wait for us! Let us borrow (a Light) from your Light!" It will be said: "Turn ye back to your rear! then seek a Light (where ye can)!" So a wall will be put up betwixt them, with a gate therein. Within it will be Mercy throughout, and without it, all alongside, will be (Wrath and) Punishment!

有人对他们说：“你们不要在地方上作恶。”他们就说：“我们只是调解的人。”

有人对他们说：“你们应当象众人那样信道。”他们就说：“我们能象愚人那样轻信吗？”真的，他们确是愚人，但他们不知道。

但不义的人改变了他们所奉的嘱言，故我降天灾於不义者，那是由於他们的犯罪。

有人对他们说：“你们应当信真主所降示的经典。”他们就说：“我们信我们所受的启示。”他们不信此後的经典，其实，这部经典是真实的，能证实他们所有的经典。你说：“如果你们是信道的人，以前你们为甚麽杀害众先知呢？”

有人劝他们说：“你们应当遵守真主所降示的经典。”他们就说：“不然，我们要遵守我们祖先的遗教。”即使他们的祖先无知无识，不循正道（他们仍要遵守他们的遗教）吗？

有人对他说：“你当敬畏真主”，他就因羞愤而犯罪。火狱将使他满足，那卧褥真恶劣。

有人对他们说：“你们来向真主和使者起诉吧”，你会看到伪信者回避你。

难道你没有看见吗？有人曾对他们说：“你们当制止自己的武力，当谨守拜功，当完纳天课。”当真主以抗战为他们的定制的时候，他们中有一部分人畏惧敌人，犹如畏惧真主，乃至更加畏惧。他们说：“我们的主啊！你为什么以抗战为我们的定制呢？你为什么不让我们延迟到一个临近的日期呢？”你说：“今世的享受，是些微的；后世的报酬，对于敬畏者，是更好的。你们不受一丝毫的亏枉。”

有人对他们说：“你们来遵守真主所降示的经典吧。来服从使者吧!”他们就说：“能满足我们的，是我们的祖先的宗教。”即使他们的祖先无知无识，不循正道，（他们仍要遵守）他们的宗教吗﹖

当时，（我）对他们说：“你们可以居住在这个城市，而任意吃其中的食物，你们应当鞠躬而入城门，并且说：『释我重负』，我就饶恕你们的种种罪过，我要厚报善人。”

但他们中不义者改变了他们所奉的嘱言，故我因他们的不义而降天灾于他们。

信道的人们啊！教你们为真主而出征的时候，你们怎么依恋故乡，懒得出发呢？难道你们愿以后世的幸福换取今世的生活吗？今世的享受比起后世的幸福来是微不足道的。

然后，有人要对不义的人们说：“你们尝试永久的刑罚吧！你们只因自己的谋求而受报酬。”

有人说：“努哈啊！你下船吧！从我发出的平安和幸福，将要降临你和与你同船的人的部分后裔。他们的另一部分后裔，我将使他们享受，然后，他们将遭受从我发出的痛苦的惩罚。”

有人问他们：”你们的主曾降示什么？”他们说：古人的神话。

如果你们发现别人家里没有人，你们就不要进去，直到你们获得许可。如果有人对你们说：“请转回去！”你们就应当立即转回去，这对于你们是更纯洁的。真主是全知你们的行为的。

如果有人对他们说：“你们应当为至仁主而叩头。”他们就说：“至仁主是什么？难道我们因奉你的命令而叩头吗？”那使他们更加反感。（此处叩头！）※

当她来到的时候，有人说：“你的宝座象这样吗？”她说：“这好象是我的宝座。”在她之前，我们已获得知识，我们已是归顺的。

有人对她说：“你进那宫殿去吧！”当她看见那座宫殿的时候她以为宫殿里是一片汪洋，（就提起衣裳）露出她的两条小腿。他说：“这确是用玻璃造成的光滑的宫殿。”她说：“我的主啊！我确是自欺的，我（现在）跟着素莱曼归顺真主--全世界的主。”

如果有人对他们说：“你们应当遵守真主所降示的（经典）。”他们就说：“不然，我们遵守我们祖先的遗教。”即使恶魔叫他们去受烈火的刑罚，（他们仍要遵循）吗？

有声音对他说：“你入乐园吧！”他说：“但愿我的宗族知道，

如果有声音对他们说：“你们当畏惧在你们之前的，和在你们之后，以便你们蒙主的怜悯。”

如果有声音对他们说：“你们应当分舍真主所赐予你们的。”那末，不信道者将对信道者说：“真主欲供养谁就供养谁，我们何必供养他呢？你们只是在明显的迷误中。”

他们确是这样的：有人对他们说：“除真主外，绝无应受崇拜的”，他们就妄自尊大，

或者对他们说”你们进火狱门去，并永居其中吧！自大者的住处真恶劣！”

然后将有天神对他们说：“你们舍真主而崇拜的（偶像）在那里呢？”

人们对你说的，不过是以往对众使者说过的谰言，你的主，确是有赦宥的，确是有痛惩的。

有人说：“真主的应许，确是真实的；复活时是毫无疑义的。”你们就说：“我们不知道复活时是什么，我们只猜想那或许是要发生的，但我们并不确信。”

在赛莫德人的故事里，也有一种迹象。当时，有人对他们说：“你们暂时享受吧！”

在那日，伪信的男女，将对信道的男女说：“请你们等候我们，让我们借你们的一点光辉！”有人将要对他们说：“你们转回去寻求光辉吧！”于是，彼此之间，筑起了一堵隔壁来，隔壁上有一道门，门内有恩惠，门外有刑罚。
