We did send messengers before thee, and appointed for them wives and children: and it was never the part of a messenger to bring a sign except as Allah permitted (or commanded). For each period is a Book (revealed).

We sent not a messenger except (to teach) in the language of his (own) people, in order to make (things) clear to them. Now Allah leaves straying those whom He pleases and guides whom He pleases: and He is Exalted in power, full of Wisdom.

Has not the story reached you, (O people!), of those who (went) before you? - of the people of Noah, and 'Ad, and Thamud? - And of those who (came) after them? None knows them but Allah. To them came messengers with Clear (Signs); but they put their hands up to their mouths, and said: "We do deny (the mission) on which ye have been sent, and we are really in suspicious (disquieting) doubt as to that to which ye invite us."

Their messengers said: "Is there a doubt about Allah, The Creator of the heavens and the earth? It is He Who invites you, in order that He may forgive you your sins and give you respite for a term appointed!" They said: "Ah! ye are no more than human, like ourselves! Ye wish to turn us away from the (gods) our fathers used to worship: then bring us some clear authority."

Their messengers said to them: "True, we are human like yourselves, but Allah doth grant His grace to such of his servants as He pleases. It is not for us to bring you an authority except as Allah permits. And on Allah let all men of faith put their trust.

And before thee also the messengers We sent were but men, to whom We granted inspiration: if ye realise this not, ask of those who possess the Message.

And We sent down the Book to thee for the express purpose, that thou shouldst make clear to them those things in which they differ, and that it should be a guide and a mercy to those who believe.

我这样派遣你去教化一个民族，在他们之前有许多民族确已逝去了，以便你对他们宣读我所启示你的经典，他们是不信至仁主的。你说：“他是我的主，除他之外，绝无应受崇拜的。我只信托他，我只以他为依归。”

在你之前，我确已派遣了许多使者，并赏赐他们妻子和儿女。除非奉真主的命令，任何使者不能昭示迹象。每个期限，各有判定。

我不派遣一个使者则已，但派遣的时候，总是以他的宗族的语言（降示经典），以便他为他们阐明正道。而真主使他所意欲者误入迷途，使他所意欲者遵循正路。他确是强大的，确是至睿的。

你们以前的民族--努哈的宗族、阿德人、赛莫德人和他们以后的人，只有真主能知道他们--难道这等人的消息没有来临你们吗？他们族中的使者昭示他们许多明证，但他们把自己的手指插入口内，说：“我们必定不信你们所奉的使命，我们对于你们所宣传的事情，确是在使人不安的疑惑之中。”

他们族中的使者说：“难道对于真主--天地的创造者--还有怀疑吗？他号召你们行善，以便他饶恕你们的罪过，并对你们缓刑到一个定期。”他们说：“你们只是像我们一样的凡人，你们欲阻止我们崇拜我们的祖先所崇拜的（偶像），你们昭示我们一个明证吧！”

以物配主者说：“假若真主意欲，则我们和我们的祖先不会舍他而崇拜任何物的，我们也不会擅自戒除任何物的。”在他们之前的人，曾这样做过了。使者们只负明白的传达的责任。

在你之前，我只派遣了我所启示的一些男子。你们应当请教深明教诲者，如果你们不知道。

我降示这部经典，只为使你对他们阐明他们所争论的（是非），并且以这部经典作为信道的民众的向导和恩惠。
