Their messengers said: "Is there a doubt about Allah, The Creator of the heavens and the earth? It is He Who invites you, in order that He may forgive you your sins and give you respite for a term appointed!" They said: "Ah! ye are no more than human, like ourselves! Ye wish to turn us away from the (gods) our fathers used to worship: then bring us some clear authority."

Their messengers said to them: "True, we are human like yourselves, but Allah doth grant His grace to such of his servants as He pleases. It is not for us to bring you an authority except as Allah permits. And on Allah let all men of faith put their trust.

"These our people have taken for worship gods other than Him: why do they not bring forward an authority clear (and convincing) for what they do? Who doth more wrong than such as invent a falsehood against Allah?

"I will certainly punish him with a severe penalty, or execute him, unless he bring me a clear reason (for absence)."

"And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest.

And in Moses (was another Sign): Behold, We sent him to Pharaoh, with authority manifest.

Or have they a ladder, by which they can (climb up to heaven and) listen (to its secrets)? Then let (such a) listener of theirs produce a manifest proof.

O ye assembly of Jinns and men! If it be ye can pass beyond the zones of the heavens and the earth, pass ye! not without authority shall ye be able to pass!

他们族中的使者说：“难道对于真主--天地的创造者--还有怀疑吗？他号召你们行善，以便他饶恕你们的罪过，并对你们缓刑到一个定期。”他们说：“你们只是像我们一样的凡人，你们欲阻止我们崇拜我们的祖先所崇拜的（偶像），你们昭示我们一个明证吧！”

他们族中的一个使者对他们说：“我们只是像你们一样的凡人，但真主施恩于他所意欲的仆人。我们不该昭示你们任何明证，除非奉真主的命令，信道者只信托真主。

我们的这些同族，舍他而崇拜别的许多神明，他们怎么不用一个明证来证实那些神明是应受崇拜的呢？假借真主的名义而造谣的人，有谁比他们还不义呢？”

我必定严厉地惩罚它，或杀掉它，除非它带一个明证来给我。”

你们不要对真主高傲。我必定要昭示你们一个明证。

在穆萨的故事里也有一种迹象。当时，我曾派遣他带著一件明证去见法老。

难道他们有一架天梯，可以登上去倾听吗？叫他们中的倾听者拿一个明证来吧！

精灵和人类的群众啊！如果你们能通过天地的境界，你们就通过吧！你们必须凭据一种权柄，才能通过。
