Those who give partners (to Allah) will say: "If Allah had wished, we should not have given partners to Him nor would our fathers; nor should we have had any taboos." So did their ancestors argue falsely, until they tasted of Our wrath. Say: "Have ye any (certain) knowledge? If so, produce it before us. Ye follow nothing but conjecture: ye do nothing but lie."

They said: "Comest thou to us, that we may worship Allah alone, and give up the cult of our fathers? bring us what thou threatenest us with, if so be that thou tellest the truth!"

Or lest ye should say: "Our fathers before us may have taken false gods, but we are (their) descendants after them: wilt Thou then destroy us because of the deeds of men who were futile?"

They said: "O Salih! thou hast been of us! a centre of our hopes hitherto! dost thou (now) forbid us the worship of what our fathers worshipped? But we are really in suspicious (disquieting) doubt as to that to which thou invitest us."

They said: "O Shu'aib! Does thy (religion of) prayer command thee that we leave off the worship which our fathers practised, or that we leave off doing what we like with our property? truly, thou art the one that forbeareth with faults and is right-minded!"

Their messengers said: "Is there a doubt about Allah, The Creator of the heavens and the earth? It is He Who invites you, in order that He may forgive you your sins and give you respite for a term appointed!" They said: "Ah! ye are no more than human, like ourselves! Ye wish to turn us away from the (gods) our fathers used to worship: then bring us some clear authority."

The worshippers of false gods say: "If Allah had so willed, we should not have worshipped aught but Him - neither we nor our fathers,- nor should we have prescribed prohibitions other than His." So did those who went before them. But what is the mission of messengers but to preach the Clear Message?

"And also our fathers of old?"

以物配主的人将说：“假若真主意欲，那末，我们和我们的祖先，都不以物配主，我们也不以任何物为禁物。”他们之前的人，曾这样否认（他们族中的使者），直到他们尝试了我的刑罚。你说：“你们有真知灼见，可以拿出来给我们看看吗？你们只凭猜测，尽说谎话。”

他们说：“你来教我们只崇拜真主，而抛弃我们祖先所崇拜的（偶像）吗？你把你所用来警告我们的（刑罚）拿来给我们看看吧，如果你是说实话的！”

或者说：“只有我们的祖先从前曾以物配主，我们不过是他们的后裔；难道你要因荒诞者的行为而毁灭我们吗？”

他们说：“撒立哈啊！以前，你在我们中间是众望所归的，难道你禁止我们崇拜我们祖先所崇拜的（偶像）吗？我们对于你用以号召我们的事确在令人不安的怀疑之中。”

他们说：“舒阿卜啊！难道你的祈祷命令你让我们放弃我们祖先所崇拜的（偶像）并命令你教我们不要自由地支配我们的财产吗？你确是宽仁的，确是精神健全的！”

他们族中的使者说：“难道对于真主--天地的创造者--还有怀疑吗？他号召你们行善，以便他饶恕你们的罪过，并对你们缓刑到一个定期。”他们说：“你们只是像我们一样的凡人，你们欲阻止我们崇拜我们的祖先所崇拜的（偶像），你们昭示我们一个明证吧！”

以物配主者说：“假若真主意欲，则我们和我们的祖先不会舍他而崇拜任何物的，我们也不会擅自戒除任何物的。”在他们之前的人，曾这样做过了。使者们只负明白的传达的责任。

连我们的祖先，也要复活吗？”
