They said: "Comest thou to us, that we may worship Allah alone, and give up the cult of our fathers? bring us what thou threatenest us with, if so be that thou tellest the truth!"

And We put coverings over their hearts (and minds) lest they should understand the Qur'an, and deafness into their ears: when thou dost commemorate thy Lord and Him alone in the Qur'an, they turn on their backs, fleeing (from the Truth).

When Allah, the One and Only, is mentioned, the hearts of those who believe not in the Hereafter are filled with disgust and horror; but when (gods) other than He are mentioned, behold, they are filled with joy!

(The answer will be:) "This is because, when Allah was invoked as the Only (object of worship), ye did reject Faith, but when partners were joined to Him, ye believed! the Command is with Allah, Most High, Most Great!"

But when they saw Our Punishment, they said: "We believe in Allah,- the one Allah - and we reject the partners we used to join with Him."

There is for you an excellent example (to follow) in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people: "We are clear of you and of whatever ye worship besides Allah: we have rejected you, and there has arisen, between us and you, enmity and hatred for ever,- unless ye believe in Allah and Him alone": But not when Abraham said to his father: "I will pray for forgiveness for thee, though I have no power (to get) aught on thy behalf from Allah." (They prayed): "Our Lord! in Thee do we trust, and to Thee do we turn in repentance: to Thee is (our) Final Goal.

他们说：“你来教我们只崇拜真主，而抛弃我们祖先所崇拜的（偶像）吗？你把你所用来警告我们的（刑罚）拿来给我们看看吧，如果你是说实话的！”

我在他们的心上加了许多罩子，以免他们了解《古兰经》；又在他们的耳里造重听，当你在《古兰经》里只提到你的主的时候，他们憎恶地离去。

有人只提及真主的时候，不信后世者便满心厌恶；有人提及真主以外的众神灵的时候，他们便兴高彩烈。

这是因为祈祷真主的时候，你们否认了他的独一；如果以物配他，你们就承认那是合理的，故判决只归真主--至尊至大的主。

当他们看见我的刑罚的时候，他们说：“我们只信真主，不信我们所用以配他的。”

易卜拉欣和他的教徒，是你们的好模范。当时，他们曾对自己的宗族说：“我们对於你们，和你们舍真主而崇拜的，确是无干的，我们不承认你们。我们彼此间的仇恨，永远存在。直到你们只信仰真主。”但易卜拉欣对他父亲所说的话，不可做你们的模范。他曾说：“我必定为你求饶，我不能为你抵御真主的一些刑罚。”他们曾说：“我们的主啊！我们只信托你，我们只依归你，只有你是最後的归宿。
