Set forth to them, by way of a parable, the (story of) the Companions of the City. Behold!, there came messengers to it.

When We (first) sent to them two messengers, they rejected them: But We strengthened them with a third: they said, "Truly, we have been sent on a mission to you."

Behold! he approached his Lord with a sound heart.

Behold! he said to his father and to his people, "What is that which ye worship?

Behold, he said to his people, "Will ye not fear (Allah)?

Behold, We delivered him and his adherents, all

When he ran away (like a slave from captivity) to the ship (fully) laden,

Has the Story of the Disputants reached thee? Behold, they climbed over the wall of the private chamber;

When they entered the presence of David, and he was terrified of them, they said: "Fear not: we are two disputants, one of whom has wronged the other: Decide now between us with truth, and treat us not with injustice, but guide us to the even Path..

Behold, there were brought before him, at eventide coursers of the highest breeding, and swift of foot;

Commemorate Our Servant Job. Behold he cried to his Lord: "The Evil One has afflicted me with distress and suffering!"

"No knowledge have I of the Chiefs on high, when they discuss (matters) among themselves.

Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: "I am about to create man from clay:

Who, then, doth more wrong than one who utters a lie concerning Allah, and rejects the Truth when it comes to him; is there not in Hell an abode for blasphemers?

The Unbelievers will be addressed: "Greater was the aversion of Allah to you than (is) your aversion to yourselves, seeing that ye were called to the Faith and ye used to refuse."

Behold, the messengers came to them, from before them and behind them, (preaching): "Serve none but Allah." They said, "If our Lord had so pleased, He would certainly have sent down angels (to preach). Now we reject your mission (altogether)."

When ye have done wrong, it will avail you nothing, that Day, that ye shall be partners in Punishment!

Mention (Hud) one of 'Ad's (own) brethren: Behold, he warned his people about the winding Sand-tracts: but there have been warners before him and after him: "Worship ye none other than Allah: Truly I fear for you the Penalty of a Mighty Day."

And We had firmly established them in a (prosperity and) power which We have not given to you (ye Quraish!) and We had endowed them with (faculties of) hearing, seeing, heart and intellect: but of no profit to them were their (faculties of) hearing, sight, and heart and intellect, when they went on rejecting the Signs of Allah; and they were (completely) encircled by that which they used to mock at!

Allah's Good Pleasure was on the Believers when they swore Fealty to thee under the Tree: He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down Tranquillity to them; and He rewarded them with a speedy Victory;

While the Unbelievers got up in their hearts heat and cant - the heat and cant of ignorance,- Allah sent down His Tranquillity to his Messenger and to the Believers, and made them stick close to the command of self-restraint; and well were they entitled to it and worthy of it. And Allah has full knowledge of all things.

Behold, two (guardian angels) appointed to learn (his doings) learn (and noted them), one sitting on the right and one on the left.

Behold, they entered his presence, and said: "Peace!" He said, "Peace!" (and thought, "These seem) unusual people."

And in Moses (was another Sign): Behold, We sent him to Pharaoh, with authority manifest.

And in the 'Ad (people) (was another Sign): Behold, We sent against them the devastating Wind:

And in the Thamud (was another Sign): Behold, they were told, "Enjoy (your brief day) for a little while!"

Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!)

Those who avoid great sins and shameful deeds, only (falling into) small faults,- verily thy Lord is ample in forgiveness. He knows you well when He brings you out of the earth, And when ye are hidden in your mothers' wombs. Therefore justify not yourselves: He knows best who it is that guards against evil.

(Their allies deceived them), like the Evil One, when he says to man, "Deny Allah": but when (man) denies Allah, (the Evil One) says, "I am free of thee: I do fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!"

There is for you an excellent example (to follow) in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people: "We are clear of you and of whatever ye worship besides Allah: we have rejected you, and there has arisen, between us and you, enmity and hatred for ever,- unless ye believe in Allah and Him alone": But not when Abraham said to his father: "I will pray for forgiveness for thee, though I have no power (to get) aught on thy behalf from Allah." (They prayed): "Our Lord! in Thee do we trust, and to Thee do we turn in repentance: to Thee is (our) Final Goal.

你当以城市的居民为他们设一个譬喻。当时，使者们来临那些居民。

当时，我曾派遣两个使者去教化那些居民，但他们否认他们俩的使命，我就以第三个使者去援助他们俩。他们说：“我们确是被派遣来教化你们的。”

当时，他带着健全的心灵，来见他的主。

当时，他对他的父亲和宗族说：“你们崇拜什么？

当时，他对他的宗族说：“难道你们不敬畏真主吗？

当时，我拯救了他，和他的全体信徒；

当时，他逃到那只满载的船舶上。

两造来告状的故事来临你了吗？当时，他们逾墙而入内殿。

当时，他们去见达五德，他为他们而恐怖。他们说：“你不要恐怖！我们是两造，被告曾欺凌了原告，请你为我们秉公裁判，请你不要偏袒，请你指引我们正路。

当时，他在傍晚，检阅能静立、能奔驰的马队。

你应当记忆我的仆人安优卜。当时，他祈祷他的主说：“恶魔已使我遭受辛苦和刑罚。”

当上界的众天神争论的时候，我不知道他们的情形。

当时，你的主曾对众天神说：“我必定要用泥土创造一个人，

假借真主的名义而造谣，并且否认已降临的实言者，有谁比他还不义呢？难道火狱里没有不信道者的住处吗？

不信道者，必定要被召唤说：“真主痛恨你们，甚于你们痛恨自身，因为你们曾被召至正信，但你们不信。”

当时，众使者从他们的前后来临他们，说：“除真主外，你们不要崇拜任何物。”他们说：“假若我们的主意欲，他必降下许多天神，我们必定不信你们所奉的使命。”

你们曾行不义，所以今日这种愿望对于你们绝无裨益。因为你们要同受刑罚。

你纪念阿德人的弟兄吧！当时，他在沙丘警告他的宗族--在他以前和以后，有许多警告者，确已逝去了--他说：“你们应该只崇拜真主，我的确怕你们遭受重大日的刑罚。”

我确已把没有赏赐你们的地位赏赐了他们，我曾赋予他们聪明睿智；但他们的聪明睿智，对于他们毫无裨益，因为他们否认真主的迹象，所以他们一向所嘲笑的刑罚降临他们了。

真主确已喜悦信士们。当时，他们在那棵树下与你订约，他已知道他们的心事，故降镇静于他们，并报酬他们临近的胜利，

当不信道者心怀忿怒--蒙昧时代的忿怒--的时候，真主曾降镇静给使者和信士们，使他们坚持敬畏辞。他们是更宜于敬畏辞的，是应受敬辞的。真主对于万事是全知的。

当坐在右边和左边的两个记录的天神记录各人的言行的时候，

当时，他们进去见他，他们说：“祝你平安！”他说：“祝你们平安！”他想这些是生客。

在穆萨的故事里也有一种迹象。当时，我曾派遣他带著一件明证去见法老。

在阿德人的故事里，也有一种迹象。当时，我曾使无益的暴风去毁灭他们，

在赛莫德人的故事里，也有一种迹象。当时，有人对他们说：“你们暂时享受吧！”

当酸枣树蒙上一层东西的时候，

远离大罪和丑事，但犯小罪者，你的主确是宽宥的。当他从大地创造你们的时候，当你们是在母腹中的胎儿的时候，他是全知你们的；所以你们不要自称清白，他是全知敬畏者的。

他们又象恶魔一样。当时，他曾对人说：“你不要信道。”当他不信道的时候，他说：“我确是与你无干的，我的确畏惧真主--全世界的主。”

易卜拉欣和他的教徒，是你们的好模范。当时，他们曾对自己的宗族说：“我们对於你们，和你们舍真主而崇拜的，确是无干的，我们不承认你们。我们彼此间的仇恨，永远存在。直到你们只信仰真主。”但易卜拉欣对他父亲所说的话，不可做你们的模范。他曾说：“我必定为你求饶，我不能为你抵御真主的一些刑罚。”他们曾说：“我们的主啊！我们只信托你，我们只依归你，只有你是最後的归宿。
