The people of the Book ask thee to cause a book to descend to them from heaven: Indeed they asked Moses for an even greater (miracle), for they said: "Show us Allah in public," but they were dazed for their presumption, with thunder and lightning. Yet they worshipped the calf even after clear signs had come to them; even so we forgave them; and gave Moses manifest proofs of authority.

If thou couldst but see when they are confronted with the Fire! They will say: "Would that we were but sent back! Then would we not reject the signs of our Lord, but would be amongst those who believe!"

Out of what Allah hath produced in abundance in tilth and in cattle, they assigned Him a share: they say, according to their fancies: "This is for Allah, and this" - for our "partners"! but the share of their" partners "reacheth not Allah, whilst the share of Allah reacheth their "partners" ! evil (and unjust) is their assignment!

They said: "In Allah do we put out trust. Our Lord! make us not a trial for those who practise oppression;

When they entered his presence and said, "Peace!" He said, "We feel afraid of you!"

Behold, the youths betook themselves to the Cave: they said, "Our Lord! bestow on us Mercy from Thyself, and dispose of our affair for us in the right way!"

We gave strength to their hearts: Behold, they stood up and said: "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and of the earth: never shall we call upon any god other than Him: if we did, we should indeed have uttered an enormity!

Thus did We make their case known to the people, that they might know that the promise of Allah is true, and that there can be no doubt about the Hour of Judgment. Behold, they dispute among themselves as to their affair. (Some) said, "Construct a building over them": Their Lord knows best about them: those who prevailed over their affair said, "Let us surely build a place of worship over them."

"Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten!"

So they turned to themselves and said, "Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!"

They said: "Shall we believe in two men like ourselves? And their people are subject to us!"

But they said: "Our Lord! Place longer distances between our journey-stages": but they wronged themselves (therein). At length We made them as a tale (that is told), and We dispersed them all in scattered fragments. Verily in this are Signs for every (soul that is) patiently constant and grateful.

When We (first) sent to them two messengers, they rejected them: But We strengthened them with a third: they said, "Truly, we have been sent on a mission to you."

To Pharaoh, Haman, and Qarun; but they called (him)" a sorcerer telling lies!"...

Behold, they entered his presence, and said: "Peace!" He said, "Peace!" (and thought, "These seem) unusual people."

For they said: "What! a man! a Solitary one from among ourselves! shall we follow such a one? Truly should we then be straying in mind, and mad!

That was because there came to them messengers with Clear Signs, but they said: "Shall (mere) human beings direct us?" So they rejected (the Message) and turned away. But Allah can do without (them): and Allah is free of all needs, worthy of all praise.

Say: It has been revealed to me that a company of Jinns listened (to the Qur'an). They said, 'We have really heard a wonderful Recital!

信奉天经的人，请求你从天上降示他们一部经典。他们确已向穆萨请求过比这更重大的事，他们说：“你使我们亲眼看见真主吧。”急雷为他们的不义而袭击他们。在许多明证降临他们之后，他们又认犊为神，但我已恕饶这件事。 这曾赏赐穆萨一个明显的证据。

当他们奉命站在火狱边上的时候，假若你看到他们的情状……。于是，他们说：“啊！但愿我们得复返人世，我们不再否认我们的主的迹象，而我们要做信士了。”

他们把真主所创造的农产和牲畜，一份供献真主，（一份供献偶像），他们妄言：”这是真主的，这是我们的配主的。”供献他们的配主的，不能拨归真主；供献真主的，却可以拨归他们的配主。他们的决定真恶劣！

他们说：“我们只信赖真主。我们的主啊！求你不要让不义的民众迫害我们。

当时，他们进去见他，说：“祝你平安。”他说：“我们确是畏惧你们的。”

当时，有几个青年避居山洞中，他们说：“我们的主啊！求你把你那里的恩惠赏赐我们，求你使我们的事业完全端正。”

我曾使他们的心坚忍。当时，他们站起来说：“我们的主，是天地的主，我们绝不舍他而祈祷任何神明，否则，我们必定说出不近情理的话。

我这样使别人窥见他们，以便他们知道真主的诺言是真实的，复活的时刻是毫无可疑的。当时，他们为此事而争论，他们说：“你们在他们的四周修一堵围墙--他们的主是最了解他们的！”主持事务的人说：“我们必定在他们的四周建筑一所礼拜寺。”

他就为他们铸出一头牛犊--一个有犊声的躯壳， 他们就说：“这是你们的主，也是穆萨的主，但他忘记了。”

他们就互相批评。随后说：“你们（崇拜偶像）确是不义的。”

他们说：“我们怎能信仰象我们样的两个凡人呢？何况他俩的宗族是服侍我们的。”

然后，他们说：“我们的主啊！求你放长各站之间的距离。”他们自欺，所以我以他们为谈助。我使他们流离失所。对于每个多忍多谢的人，此中确有许多迹象。

当时，我曾派遣两个使者去教化那些居民，但他们否认他们俩的使命，我就以第三个使者去援助他们俩。他们说：“我们确是被派遣来教化你们的。”

去教化法老、哈曼和戈伦，但他们说：“他是谬妄的术士。”

当时，他们进去见他，他们说：“祝你平安！”他说：“祝你们平安！”他想这些是生客。

故他们说：“我们同族的一个凡人，我们能顺从他吗？如果那样，我们必定陷于迷误和疯狂之中。

这是因为他们族中的使者显示他们许多明证，他们却说：“难道凡人也能引道我们？”故他们不信道而违背之。真主曾表示无求於他们的信仰，真主是无求的，是可颂的。
