Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book had faith, it were best for them: among them are some who have faith, but most of them are perverted transgressors.

The people of the Book ask thee to cause a book to descend to them from heaven: Indeed they asked Moses for an even greater (miracle), for they said: "Show us Allah in public," but they were dazed for their presumption, with thunder and lightning. Yet they worshipped the calf even after clear signs had come to them; even so we forgave them; and gave Moses manifest proofs of authority.

Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah hath revealed therein. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel.

Did the people of the towns feel secure against the coming of Our wrath by night while they were asleep?

Or else did they feel secure against its coming in broad daylight while they played about (care-free)?

The inhabitants of the city came in (mad) joy (at news of the young men).

That the People of the Book may know that they have no power whatever over the Grace of Allah, that (His) Grace is (entirely) in His Hand, to bestow it on whomsoever He wills. For Allah is the Lord of Grace abounding.

But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness.

你们是为世人而被产生的最优秀的民族，你们劝善戒恶，确信真主。假若信奉天经的人确信正道，那对于他们是更好的。他们中有一部分是信士，大部分是罪人。

信奉天经的人，请求你从天上降示他们一部经典。他们确已向穆萨请求过比这更重大的事，他们说：“你使我们亲眼看见真主吧。”急雷为他们的不义而袭击他们。在许多明证降临他们之后，他们又认犊为神，但我已恕饶这件事。 这曾赏赐穆萨一个明显的证据。

信奉《引支勒》的人，当依真主在《引支勒》中所降示的律例而判决。凡不依真主所降示的经典而判决的人，都是犯罪的。

各城市的居民难道不怕我的刑罚，当他们在夜间酣睡的时候降临他们吗？

各城市的居民难道不怕我的刑罚，在上午，当他们在游戏的时候降临他们吗？

城里的居民欣然而来，

以便曾受天经的人们知道，他们简直不能操纵真主的恩典，并且知道，凡恩典都在真主的掌握中，他要赏赐谁，就赏赐谁，真主是有宏恩的。

他们只因真主的意欲而记忆它。他是应受敬畏的，他是宜於赦宥的。
