Who say, when afflicted with calamity: "To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return":-

What! When a single disaster smites you, although ye smote (your enemies) with one twice as great, do ye say?- "Whence is this?" Say (to them): "It is from yourselves: For Allah hath power over all things."

How then, when they are seized by misfortune, because of the deeds which they hands have sent forth? Then their come to thee, swearing by Allah: "We meant no more than good-will and conciliation!"

There are certainly among you men who would tarry behind: If a misfortune befalls you, they say: "Allah did favour us in that we were not present among them."

If good befalls thee, it grieves them; but if a misfortune befalls thee, they say, "We took indeed our precautions beforehand," and they turn away rejoicing.

If (We had) not (sent thee to the Quraish),- in case a calamity should seize them for (the deeds) that their hands have sent forth, they might say: "Our Lord! why didst Thou not sent us a messenger? We should then have followed Thy Signs and been amongst those who believe!"

他们遭难的时候，说：“我们确是真主所有的，我们必定只归依他。”

你们所遭受的损失，只有你们所加给敌人的损失的一半，你们怎么还说：“这是从哪里来的呢?”你说：“这是你们自作自受的。”真主对于万事确是全能的。

因为曾经犯了罪而遭遇灾难，然后， 他们会来见你而指真主发誓说：“我们只图亲善与和解。”在那时，你将怎么办呢？

你们中的确有人逗留后方，如果你们遭遇灾难，他就说：“真主确已护佑我，因为我没有同他们在前方。”

如果你获得胜利，他们就觉得难过；如果你遭到失败，他们就说：“我们事先早已提防了。”他们洋洋得意地转回去。

若不是他们将为自己犯罪而遭殃，并且说：“我们的主啊！你怎么不派一个使者来教化我们，使我们遵守你的迹象，而为信士呢？……”
