When they meet those who believe, they say: "We believe;" but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say: "We are really with you: We (were) only jesting."

Or do ye think that ye shall enter the Garden (of bliss) without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you? they encountered suffering and adversity, and were so shaken in spirit that even the Messenger and those of faith who were with him cried: "When (will come) the help of Allah?" Ah! Verily, the help of Allah is (always) near!

Ah! ye are those who love them, but they love you not,- though ye believe in the whole of the Book. When they meet you, they say, "We believe": But when they are alone, they bite off the very tips of their fingers at you in their rage. Say: "Perish in you rage; Allah knoweth well all the secrets of the heart."

Do they then expect (any thing) but (what happened in) the days of the men who passed away before them? Say: "Wait ye then: for I, too, will wait with you."

We have already sent down to you verses making things clear, an illustration from (the story of) people who passed away before you, and an admonition for those who fear (Allah).

There can be no difficulty to the Prophet in what Allah has indicated to him as a duty. It was the practice (approved) of Allah amongst those of old that have passed away. And the command of Allah is a decree determined.

(Such was) the practice (approved) of Allah among those who lived aforetime: No change wilt thou find in the practice (approved) of Allah.

他们遇见信士们就说：“我们已信道了。”他们回去见了自己的恶魔，就说：“我们确是你们的同党，我们不过是愚弄他们罢了。”

你们还没有遭遇前人所遭遇的患难，就猜想自己得入乐园了吗？前人曾遭受穷困和患难，曾受震惊，甚至使者和信道的人都说：“真主的援助甚麽时候降临呢？”真的，真主的援助，确是临近的。

你们喜爱他们，他们却不喜爱你们，你们确信一切天经，而他们遇见你们就说：“我们已信道了。”他们私相聚会的时候，为怨恨你们而咬自己的指头。你说：“你们为怨恨而死亡吧！”真主确是全知心事的。

他们只等待在他们之前逝去者所遭的那种苦难日子。”你说：“你们等待吧！我确是与你们一起等待的。”

我确已把许多明白的迹象和在你们之前逝去者的先例， 以及对于敬畏者的教训，降示你们。

先知对于真主所许他的事，不宜感觉烦难。真主曾以此为古人的常道。真主的命令是不可变更的定案。

这是真主对于古人的常道，你绝不能发现任何变更。
